Project duration:

September 2022 - November 2022

The Problem:

Many people lead busy, active lives filled with numerous events and responsibilities throughout the day. The HelloDaily team aims to provide a solution by helping users organize their schedules and centralize important information and health statistics in one easy-to-access platform.

The Goal:

Design an app that enhances the experience of adding and editing tasks, making it more intuitive and efficient, ultimately helping users lead a more productive and organized life.

My Role:

As the UX/UI designer, I led the design of both the app and responsive website, guiding the process from initial concept to final delivery. My focus was on creating an intuitive and user-friendly experience across all platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct user interviews to gather insights

• Create paper and digital wireframes

• Develop low- and high-fidelity prototypes

• Perform usability studies and incorporate feedback

• Ensure accessibility standards are met

• Iterate on designs based on findings

• Design information architecture and navigation

• Implement responsive design for different devices

Understanding the user

  • User research

  • Personas

  • Problem statements

  • User journey maps

User research: summary

I used HelloDaily’s data on daily planners to develop interview questions, which were then used in user interviews. Most participants expressed hope for a simple app that could consistently support them. Additionally, some users showed interest in having a health diary feature integrated into the app.

User research: pain points

Time

Working adults too busy to spend time washing clothes at home.

No technical capability

No possibility to install washing machine in small flat.

Pickup points

Users need a delivery service, because difficult to get a pickup point.

Lack of skills

In some cases need a professional cleaning.

Competitive audit

A product audit of several competitors identified gaps and opportunities that can be addressed with the HelloDaily app.

Starting the design

  • Paper wireframes

  • Digital wireframes

  • Low-fidelity prototype

  • Usability studies

I conducted a quick ideation exercise to generate ideas for addressing the gaps identified during the competitive audit. My focus was on creating a simple design with easy-to-complete tasks, ensuring that the app would be intuitive and user-friendly for all users. This approach aimed to enhance the overall experience while maintaining functionality and clarity.

Idiation

Digital wireframes

After ideating and sketching paper wireframes, I developed the initial designs for the HelloDaily app. These designs were centered around displaying all of the user’s tasks for the day on a single screen, allowing them to efficiently manage their time and stay organized throughout the day. The goal was to create a simple, intuitive interface that would help users keep track of their tasks without overwhelming them.

Low-fidelity prototype

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that mapped the user flow for viewing and adding tasks. This prototype allowed for quick testing of key features and helped gather valuable feedback on how users interact with task management in the app. It served as a foundation for refining the design before moving on to higher fidelity versions.

Usability study: parameters

Study type:

Unmoderated usability study

Participants:

5 participants

Location:

Finland, remote

Length:

10-15 minutes

Usability study: findings

These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study:

Findings

Users want to see calendar view when selecting a task date.

Users want to have multiple choice for activity selection.

Users need a possibility to add an image to the task.

Refining the design

  • Mockups

  • High-fidelity prototype

  • Accessibility

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like adding calendar view for date selection.

Additional design changes included adding a multiple choice for “ADD” button.

High-fidelity prototype

The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

Accessibility considerations

Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.

Dark mode helps to turn the screen to dark at night time.

Dark mode

Dark mode users find reading easier in low light with less eye strain.

Responsive Design

  • Information architecture

  • Responsive design

With the app designs finalized, I began working on the responsive website. I used the HelloDaily sitemap to inform the organizational structure of each screen, ensuring that the design would provide a cohesive and consistent user experience across different devices. This approach helped maintain usability while adapting the interface to various screen sizes.

Responsive website

The designs for various screen sizes, including mobile, tablet, and desktop, were optimized to meet the specific user needs of each device. This approach ensured that the layout and functionality adapted seamlessly to different screen dimensions, providing an intuitive and consistent experience across all platforms.

Going forward

  • Takeaways

  • Next steps

Impact:

One quote from peer feedback was that “The app makes trying to keep track of your daily tasks a fun experience.”

What I Learned:

I learned that while the problem I aimed to solve was complex, following each step of the design process and aligning closely with specific user needs allowed me to create solutions that were both practical and valuable. This approach ensured that the final designs were not only feasible but also truly useful to the users.

Next step

Conduct research on how successful the app is in reaching the goal to help to organize the day.

Add some new features that help users to get better experience using our service.
